Mistreated Islands
“Mistreated Islands” is about islands that are becoming a cause of political conflict. It addresses the discrimination and neglect focused toward these smaller islands and the people, who by chance are living there; thus, making the people living on these islands minorities. I realized that there are many similar stories around the world. Okinawa, Japan is one of these islands in conflict, and is a catalyst for both domestic political debate and social conflict between Japan’s main island and the U.S.A. My work introduces an issue of one country in order to foster awareness of it being a universal issue. The “Mistreated Island” series does not only address social and political issues, but also the beauty of nature and the people who are living there.
